Melissa Black, PMHNP
I am a Lansing-raised Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I’m also a mom, spouse, sister, and daughter. I love nature, music, books, movies, and travel. I love to crochet, and to curate my spaces with comfort and calming. I value honesty and integrity. I value radical acceptance, wise mind principals, and a recovery-based mindset (and treatment platform).
I Have Experience With…
Recovery-based treatment models
Focuses on empowering individuals to take an active role in their healing process, emphasizing personal strengths, resilience, and long-term wellness rather than just symptom reduction. These models support the idea that recovery is a unique, non-linear journey, and prioritize collaboration, autonomy, and hope.
Trauma-Informed Care
An approach that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment in the healing process. It seeks to avoid re-traumatization by understanding trauma’s effects on behavior and integrating that awareness into every aspect of care.
Mindfulness Approach and Training
Cultivating present-moment awareness with openness and non-judgment, helping individuals respond to thoughts and emotions with greater clarity and calm. Through mindfulness training, people learn practical techniques to reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and enhance overall well-being.
Intuitive Eating
A self-care approach to food that encourages listening to your body’s natural hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues rather than following external diet rules. It promotes a healthy relationship with food by honoring internal signals, rejecting diet culture, and fostering trust in one’s own body.
Neutrality and Dialectics
Approaching thoughts, emotions, and behaviors without judgment—seeing them as information rather than labeling them as good or bad. Dialectics refers to holding two seemingly opposite truths at the same time, allowing for flexibility, balance, and growth in the face of complexity and change.
My Approach & Philosophy
My goal is to offer each person a safe, supportive space where they feel truly seen and heard. If at any point it doesn’t feel like the right fit, I’m always happy to help connect you with other resources that might better meet your needs. Above all, I prioritize compassion, safety, and respect for every individual. These values are at the heart of my work as a mental health clinician—they may not make me unique, but they are deeply important to me.
